Radio 1 asks young driver’s their opinion…

Wednesday, August 26, 2009

I heard a news report on Radio 1 this morning talking about, and to, young drivers who drive without insurance.

It seems some young drivers take the view that because young drivers insurance can be so expensive, and some can’t afford the premuims, it makes it OK to ‘front’ a policy or just drive uninsured!

Fronting a policy is when a parent insures their child’s car in their name and with their son or daughter just being a named driver- even athough the child will actually be the main driver of the vehicle. However, many people aren’t aware that this is illegal and if caught, the insurance will be invalidated and the young driver could be charged with driving without insurance.

Unfortunatley when it comes to young drivers facing high car insurance premiums, the statistics speak for themselves. According to the AA, one in five drivers are involved in a crash during their first year on the road; and male drivers under 21 are 10 times more likely to have a car accident than a male driver over the age of 35. In 2007, 40% of passengers killed or seriously injured on the UK’s roads were in cars with a young driver.

But it’s not all bad news! There are some choices young drivers can consider to keep their premuims in check, such as sitting a pass plus test, choosing lower group vehicles and building up your own no claims bonus as quickly as possible. These are choices that our Ezee Driver policy, not only encourages, but makes possible by having pass plus discounts built into our premiums and a 2 years no claims bonus awarded after 18 months cover.

The dangers and consquences of driving without insurance are simply not worth the risk, and at Andrew Yule Insurance we have been working very hard at helping young drivers find good, affordable cover. We continue to review, adapt and improve our young drivers policies so that young drivers can be out on the road driving safely and fully covered.
